Chocolate Cyst: What is endometriotic cyst and its effects on fertility?

Chocolate Cyst: What is endometriotic cyst and its effects on fertility?

A chocolate cyst is a condition that is a commonly found in women who are in reproductive age and have endometriosis. In medical terms, it is also known as an endometriotic cyst. It is a condition in which an ovarian cyst is a filled with old blood and can affect the working of ovaries and even lead to an infertility.

Chocolate Cyst: Causes

Any menstruating female can a develop endometriosis. It’s more likely to a happen between ages 25 and 40. It is hypothesized that when the menstrual blood flows, some of it flows back down the fallopian tubes and gets embedded into the surroundings of the uterus  or the uterine wall. The endometrial cells are like a small seeds and slowly grow bigger into cysts. Whichever part they  obtain embedded on, whether it is the pelvic floor, fallopian tubes, intestines, vagina, or the uterus; the cysts will grow there. The most common organ  thought is the ovary. The discharge gets into the ovaries and releases blood. But there is no place for the blood to a flow. This causes the blood to accumulate gradually and the cyst gets filled with it. If the blood stays in the cyst for a long time, it will appear brown and resemble chocolate. This is why it is also known as a chocolate cyst.

The endometrial tissue a  lines the uterus. In endometriosis, this tissue can grow outside the uterine wall. This tissue then attaches to a other parts such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and also nearby organs such as the urinary bladder. This can lead to painful and heavy menses. In severe cases, the affected organs can also be a damaged.

Various an industry experts state that estrogen plays a key role in causing this condition. Genetics of a  course is an important factor for females to develop this condition.

Problems such as thyroid, PCOS, and regular intake of a prescription fertility drugs can also cause a fluctuations in progesterone and estrogen levels further leading to the chocolate cyst. Infections in the pelvic region that are left unattended can spread to a neighbouring tissues and organs and further affect the ovaries.

Symptoms of a Chocolate Cyst

The symptoms of a chocolate cyst are varied and some of them are similar to that of an endometriosis. They include

Painful periods

Extreme pelvic pain during menses

Pain during sex

Digestive troubles

Painful bowel movements

Heavy menstrual flow

Difficulty in conceiving

To a diagnose the condition the right way, an ultrasound of the ovaries is an essential. The tissue needs to be examined and in some cases, even the cyst will have to be a removed for further analysis. A routine vaginal ultrasound or X-ray can help discover the cyst. A pelvic ultrasound may be advised during a routine pelvic examination. In certain cases, a needle biopsy may also be recommended wherein the liquid is an extracted from the cyst and gauged under a microscope for further diagnosis.

Chocolate cyst affecting the fertility

Chocolate cysts attach to the ovaries and can significantly impact ovarian function. In certain cases, they even hamper the functioning of ovaries and prevent pregnancy. It thus impacts fertility and causes  problems in conceiving. The endometrial growth triggers inflammation and due to this reason, it can be a challenging for the fertilized egg to implant in the uterus. This inflammation can also affect the developing embryo. The cysts make it difficult for the ovaries to produce eggs. If an ovulation occurs less frequently or the eggs are not healthy, the chance of pregnancy decreases. Various studies also highlight that removing cysts can damage the ovaries or deplete the egg reserve. This can further impact fertility. If large cysts rupture anytime, their content could enter the pelvic cavity and this can cause fertility blockages and pain. It can a  also impact the fallopian tube and this may pose a hindrance in the movement of the sperm as well as the egg. It can even interfere with the implantation process of a fertilized egg and this could significantly increase the risk of a  miscarriage.

Right treatment for chocolate cysts

The treatment for a chocolate cyst depends on the age as well as the symptoms. It is also dependent on whether one or both ovaries are affected and your reproductive goals. Doctors may recommend removing the cyst if there are signs of infertility. If in case, a woman plans to an undergo IVF, surgical cyst removal can make the process all the more challenging and the chances of a pregnancy reduce significantly.

US Military Gets ‘Most Powerful Laser Weapon Till Date’; Lockheed Delivers 300 KW DEW Under HELSI Program

US Military Gets ‘Most Powerful Laser Weapon Till Date’; Lockheed Delivers 300 KW DEW Under HELSI Program

In July this year, U.S. lawmakers asked the armed services to expedite efforts toward developing Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs). The U.S. defense industrial complex has been testing High beam laser weapons in conjunction with the military at an unprecedented speed.

U.S. Defense giant Lockheed Martin recently revealed that it had delivered a 300-kilowatt laser to the Defense Department for use in future Army high-energy laser demonstrations. It is the highest-powered laser to date for the U.S. Department Of Defense.

Lockheed Martin developed the laser as part of the Pentagon’s High Energy Laser Scaling Initiative (HELSI), which aims to expand the directed energy industrial base and enhance the caliber of laser beams.

in spite of to the press release, Lockheed was chosen by the Pentagon in 2019 to scale its spectrum beam merged high energy laser architecture to the 300 kW-class level as part of the HELSI project. The task was done ahead of schedule,  in spite of to the announcement.

Given its accuracy, quick response, and high “hit probability” against fast-moving missiles, DEWs are becoming more  famous as non-kinetic hard and soft kill defenses against ballistic missile threats.

Lockheed Martin vice president of advanced product solutions Rick Cordaro stated that the laser uses “spectral beam combination architecture.”

Spectral beam combining (SBC), also referred to as wavelength beam combining, is the process of superimposing several laser emitter outputs at distinct wavelengths to create a single beam.

The laser will partake in and assist U.S. Army’s Indirect Fires Protection Capability-High Energy Laser (IFPC-HEL) scheduled for lab and field testing this year.

IFPC-HEL program is one of the 35 key modernization goals for the Army. While it is run by the Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies (RCCTC) Office, the program is part of the service’s priority area for air and missile defense.

Previously, RCCTC coordinated the development of the Directed Energy Maneuver-Short Range Air Defense (DEM-SHORAD) prototype, which was tested against drones and mortars last year with limited success.

By 2022, the U.S. Army intends to have two different types of laser weapons systems for air defense, including weapons of the 50 kilowatts and 300-kilowatt types installed on General Dynamics’ Stryker armored vehicles.

U.S. Military Deploying Laser As Top Priority

The U.S. Defense Department is keen on directed energy systems, such as high-energy lasers and high-power microwaves, to defend troops and military installations against aerial threats, such as short-range air defense and drones, rockets, mortars, and artillery.

રાજસ્થાન ના કર્મચારીની પગાર સ્લીપ

Since there is no ‘deployment time’ with lasers, they are an excellent instrument for aerial interception, which makes them ideal for missile defense systems.

To that end, the  2023 National Defense Authorization Act calls for bolstering the U.S. and allied air defenses against unmanned aerial systems (UAS/UAV), rockets, and artillery, as conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, and a possible war in the Western Pacific.

The delivery of a 300kW laser weapon by Lockheed Martin comes almost a month after it delivered the High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-Dazzler and Surveillance (HELIOS), a 60+ kW-class laser, to the U.S. Navy. HELIOS was mounted on the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Preble (DDG-88).
