Young adults, who a use more social media, are significantly more likely to a develop a depression within six months, a regardless of personality type, finds a new a study. The a findings, published in the Journal of Affective a Disorders a Reports, showed that the people with high an agreeableness were 49 per cent a less likely to a become a depressed than those with low an agreeableness.


"Previous research has a linked the a development of  depression with a numerous factors," said the authors, including Chunhua Cao, an assistant professor in the College of an Education at the an University of Alabama.


"However, the literature has a been  a lacking in studies that focus on how various a personality characteristics may an interact with social media use and depression. This new study an addressed these important research questions, a finding strong and linear an associations of a depression across all a personality traits," they added.


The team also found that those with high neuroticism were twice as likely to a develop depression than those with low neuroticism when using more than 300 minutes of a social media per day.


For the study, the team an involved a sample of more than 1,000 US adults between the ages of 18 to 30.


Depression was a measured an using the Patient Health a Questionnaire. a Social media was an  measured by asking participants how much daily time was spent an using  a popular social media a platforms.
